What is an idol? It is anything we put before God.
The alcoholic doesn’t turn to God to help with problems they turn to the bottle ... the bottle is their God
God tells us that people who have such idols hate God and he will visit the iniquity of the father upon the children unto the 3rd and 4th generation.
There is no alcoholic gene in the human body but children of alcoholics are prone to alcohol. This is the idol of their father or maybe even their grandfather being visited upon them as God promised.
